From The Recent Past -

  • One of our Tigers returned to Amherst High School to tell our students all about a career in Accounting. Colleen Chen, class of 2019, is a senior at UB studying Accounting and she coordinated an outstanding presentation including other UB Accounting majors and professionals from one of the big 4 Accounting firms, Ernst & Young. Students in our Career & Financial Management classes and the Accounting class enjoyed an inspiring talk about exciting careers in Accounting. Our students learned that when you work in an accounting firm, the work environment includes a lot of collaboration, leadership, and people skills. Thank you to the following UB students: Colleen Chen, Katriel Agregado, Adam Fox, Ting Zheng, and Kristina Jiang. Thank you also to Ernst & Young associates Patrick Tan (who is also a parent of two Amherst grads and two current students), Meishan Chen, and Rohit Khemlani.

  • Recently twenty Amherst Academies, DECA, and Entrepreneurship class students enjoyed an exciting field trip to the NYS Innovation Summit that was held at the Buffalo/Niagara Convention Center in Buffalo. The students listened to speakers from around New York State, and explored and interacted with over 50 different cutting edge STEM vendors throughout NYS. Some examples of the new STEM innovations are electric cars on rails that are like Uber, but without a driver; mapping technology for firefighters, and robotics. Additionally, the students watched four start up companies pitch their prototypes to a panel of judges in order to win $50,000 or more. Business teacher Mrs. Evans said her students loved having the chance to practice their soft skills, see cool innovative technology, and watch how entrepreneurs compete for seed capital. Attendees included: Ravi Albert, Aniko Baranski, Mohammed Bari, Carson Belle-Isle, David Corby, Jack Dossinger, Sal Ferro, Logan Griffin, Afsah Kamran, Projal Lohar, Quin Lyle, Naomi Marti, Billy McIntyre, Lisa Mustafa, Mariam Natiq, Robert Radulescu, Amani Saleh, Amira Saleh, Sophia Thorne, Carter Walser.

  • On Saturday, December 7, a team of students from our Coding & Programming Group consisting of Collin Olkowski (Captain), Ben Corby, Christian Horne, and Jerid Warren, placed 3rd at the High School Lockdown Cyber Security Competition held at the UB Jacobs Management Center. The High School Lockdown is a defensive security competition run by the University at Buffalo Network Defense. There were 12 teams from Buffalo and Rochester area schools. At this day-long hands-on competition, the students, in teams of 4 or less, were to defend a small network of systems from a cyber attack. They were scored based on how long their services were available (service uptime) as well as other timed tasks. Our students had a great time and are looking forward to the February competition. Congratulations Tigers!

Thank you to you and your students for an absolutely wonderful job today.  I was blown away by the caliber of the presentations, the innovation, the passion for their ideas, and the quality of research performed.  What a wonderful opportunity for them and they are lucky to have you guide them.

Buffalo is a city of innovation and I encourage them to continue to look for opportunity.

Thank you!
